The Serious Student Program
The Global Somatics Serious Student Program is designed to provide students interested in Body-Mind Centering® with an opportunity to take courses at their own pace, for personal embodiment and for professional recognition. It offers candidates considering the Global Somatics Certification Program a sample experience of curriculum and Suzanne Rivers instruction. Continuing Education Credits for all courses will be available in 2005 through American Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP)
To qualify as a "Serious Student", applicants must follow all Global Somatics course procedures; including successful registration, pre-requisite requirements, tuition plus a $130 Serious Student fee per course. "Serious Students" commit to regular attendance, class homework, and a final review meeting with Suzanne River. A file is kept on attendance and performance and the student receives a certificate of course completion. "Serious Students" can apply completed course work towards Global Somatic Certification with discounted tuition rates.
- They can take the entire course again at 50% of the current cost and do regular cert homework at that time
- They can take a certain number of classes at 50% of the current cost to deepen their embodiment and facilitation of specific material.
- They can demonstrate achievement of the Course Self Evaluation, do the required Certification Homework, and take the Competency Demonstration. They would be exempt from the tuition for this course

Elements of Embodiment, Introduction to Body-Mind Centering®

If you are seeking a dynamic, experiential understanding of your own body-mind relationship and an approach to exploring it with others Elements of Embodiment, An Introduction to Body-Mind Centering® is for you! Prior experience with Body-Mind Centering® is not required, only an interest to learn more about movement, bodywork, and the body-mind relationship.

"The study of Body-Mind Centering® is an essential preparation for any serious yoga student or teacher." (Donna Farhi) During this weekend workshop we will explore Body-Mind Centering® (BMC) and its application to Yoga asana. Inside-Out Asana builds physical sensitivity. This awareness facilitates innate alignment and the natural unfolding of traditional asana. Using embodied anatomy, movement, and hands-on partner work you will experience a whole new foundation with which to explore your asana practice.
In this workshop you will:
- Gain an anatomical & physiological understanding of your body through personal embodiment
- Organize the asanas from the different body systems & developmental patterns
- Ground through integrating the bones of the feet into the pelvis
- Move beyond external asana form through organic expression
- Activate efficient neuromuscular chains through practice of the Planal Reflexive Patterns
- Awaken prana through the external respiration of the lungs & the internal breathing of the cells

About the teachers:
Suzanne River is the founder, educational director and primary teacher of Green River Dance for Global Somatics, a place where people come together for transformation, to heal the earth, and to share through the universal language of the body. A certified teacher of Body-Mind Centering®, Suzanne has trained personally with its founder, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen and is on the faculty of The School of Body-Mind Centering®. She has created several special BMC curricula, including movement therapy programs, women's health, teen body awareness, school residencies, visual arts, yoga, Parkinson's disease, and energy medicine.
Amy Patee, a certified Yoga teacher, has been exploring the practice of Yoga since 1996. Her unique style of teaching embraces each individuals journey towards being fully alive in the physical body, completely present in the moment, and deeply connected to the entire universe. Amy has studied in-depth with Suzanne River over the last two years and she is currently enrolled in the Global Somatics Certification Program through Green River Dance for Global Somatics to become a movement therapist and Global Somatics teacher.

Holding On: Embodying the Fascia and Ligamentous System
Teacher: Suzanne River
When: Tuesdays, Sept 7 -- Oct 19 (21 hours, 7 classes), 9:30am - 12:30pm

The ligaments are specialized fascia which wrap around the joints of the body. When the ligaments of a joint are healthy, the movement of that joint becomes specific. The fascia then carries that movement effortlessly to successive joints enabling the muscles to respond with greater efficiency. Embodying your fascia and ligaments helps you feel the expansive support of the universe through all the details of your life.
- Initiate movement, touch and sound from the fascia and the ligaments
- Learn BMC techniques and principles for strengthening and repatterning ligaments and fascia
- Communicate with the fibroblasts and heal scar tissue

Developmental Movement III: The Vertebrate Patterns

The Vertebrate Patterns express the integration of the Pre-vertebrate Patterns and require the activation of the reflexes, righting reactions and equilibrium responses(RRR). You will explore all the developmental movements that take place after birth and have the opportunity to complete missing patterns.
- Embody the Vertebrate Patterns through improvisation and set movement forms: spinal, homologous, homolateral and contralateral
- Explore the movement cycle of Yield - Push - Reach - Pull
- Observe these patterns in movement and mind.
- Repattern using relevant Pre-vertebrate Patterns and RRR
- Initiate the Vertebrate Patterns from the fluids, organs and bones
- Apply the Vertebrate Patterns to yoga, dance composition and contact improvisation

Magnificent Muscles I: Embodying the Muscle System

The muscle system of the body is a three dimensional web of elastic forces moving the bones through space. The muscles function through the relationship dynamics of resistance and cooperation. Through your muscles you embody your vitality, express your power and engage in your life's work.
- Understand muscle structure and function
- Embody the psoas complex and the muscles of the lower limbs
- Practice BMC principles (proximal and distal initiation, concentric and eccentric contraction, muscle coupling and currenting)
- Discover the relationship between fascia and muscle
- Initiate movement from the molecular complex of actin/myosin
- Explore the role of the satellite cells in muscle regeneration

Glory in the Glands: Embodying the Endocrine System

Sixteen glands live like tiny power seeds along your vertical axis. The endocrine system, one of the body's earliest communication networks, sends its hormone messages through the fluids to every cell. With the nervous and immune systems, the glands support your life as an integrated organism. Through the endocrine system you access your intuition and the universal aspect of yourself.
- Understand the anatomy/physiology of the endocrine system
- Initiate breath, movement, voice and touch from each of the glands
- Embody the relationships between specific glands and their reflex points, chakras, skeletal affinities and matching developmental patterns
- Analyze and relieve back problems based on endocrine activation
- Create optimal hormones and hormonal balance
- Experience the psychophysical consciousness of the endocrine system from every cell
- Explore the glandular basis for intuition and psychic work
